An induction row to remember

Well today’s row was probably the wettest row I’ve ever done – and Rachel B agrees.

I suppose we should have been warned when the rain decided to start just as we were launching and just before we realised the bung wasn’t in! A quick screw and some bailing and we were ready to continue this induction row.

Tasked with collecting the race buoys, necessitated a change in crew positions but skilful coxing by Gill and a good catch by Andy C and the flag was retrieved first time. We then continued up river to help Steve (our inductee) to develop his rowing skills. Drop and catch, back watering, trail oars and an unscheduled demonstration of how to catch a crab by Jenny (I hate rowing 2 ☹️) and then in the increasing downpour we did a swift row down towards the mouth of the river to pick up the lumo buoy. By this time the wind had got up and it was a lot choppier so this took a bit more manoeuvring before Andy managed to get the thing on board. Steve has thus had an additional skill added to his induction of trying to get the boat up to a buoy against the tide and wind and in choppy water.

Gill then decided we’d call it a day before we were swamped and we headed in and back to the boathouse.

We can’t have got everything wrong since this hasn’t put Steve off!  As he said if he enjoyed it in this weather that was good sign.

No picture sorry – we didn’t have an underwater camera! The main photos is from a sunnier day!!
