Ten Rowers, Three Ergs, One Epic Team Challenge in Under 90 Minutes

Following a very successful initial erg-a-thon several weeks ago, the organisational whirling dervish that is Jen persuaded another 10 fine ACR athletes to have a go at a Marathon…why wouldn’t you? In a change to the previous endeavours Jen’s compassionate side was on full display and only erg’ing was to take place…no additional exercises, you-know-who was not a happy teddy!

42,195meters (aka a Marathon) is a significant challenge and the assembled athletes undertook 1,000m each then rotated so that there was enough rest, but not too long to get cold.  With 3 ergs alongside each other some friendly rivalries were initiated, with Racheal (A) face being a picture of steely determination when she wasn’t trying to persuade anyone that she just wanted fun! Marion brought an air of elegance to the proceedings and Alan’s poker face never slipped, but he did assure everyone he enjoyed it!

Rhoda “the machine” just kept grinding the metres out and Jack tried several different approaches to find the most efficient technique, although I’m not convinced he succeeded.   Andy and Lara were in some form of competition to find who could produce the cheeks with the best shade of rouge, albeit Andy did look the happiest chappy on the planet, when he finished.  Karen, to her great credit, had to complete her efforts early as she had a prior appointment taking some beavers to find wood (Ed note – this may have been scouts!)

Jen, despite not permitting additional exercises, went running in-between her efforts…. A highly tuned ACR athlete.  Ade had been a bit “under the weather” during the week so became the self-appointed chief motivator and foot strap tightener.    A special mention to Dave (A) who turned up later with only enough time to do one effort, much to Rachel’s amusement.

The Team managed to complete the Marathon in just under 90 minutes, which was a great effort from all participants.  A special thankyou to Lara, Alison and Roger for the use of their ergs. Will we perform another erg-a-thon?  Of course! when the tide and or environment is against Skiffing!
